Interstitial Lung Disease

Interstitial Lung Disease, or ILD, is an umbrella term that refers to a large group of diseases causing scarring or fibrosis of the lungs. But the common thing is that all ILD affect the interstitium, a lace-like network of tissue that lies throughout both your lungs. It supports alveoli, the tiny air sacs in your lungs. Although COPD and ILD have distinct medical features, a person may have both diseases because they are caused by similar risk factors like smoking, male sex & old age.
Interstitial Lung Disease

Symptoms of ILD may include:

  • Shortness of Breath
  • Breathlessness that Worse over Time
  • Dry Cough
  • Weight Loss

All forms of ILD result in the interstitium becoming thick, followed by inflammation, scarring, or fluid buildup. Most common conditions of ILD may include Interstitial Pneumonia (caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi), Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (causing scar tissues to grow in the interstitium), Non-specific Interstitial Pneumonitis (caused by autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or scleroderma) Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis (caused by dust, mold, etc.), Cryptogenic Organizing Pneumonia, etc. You can seek help from Dr. Tarun Kumar Baid with all types of ILD.
