Emphysema

Emphysema is one of the severe conditions of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD. This lung disease involves gradual destruction of lung tissues, especially alveoli (tiny air sacs); the condition develops over time and cannot be cured permanently. This lung disease is called "obstructive" as it seems like something is blocking the smooth flow of air in your lungs. Emphysema causes the formation of air pockets in your lungs; air gets trapped in the damaged pouches of alveoli, leading to swelling of lungs.
